The Skyhawk Association has a goal of identifying the location of all A-4 Skyhawks on public display throughout the world. A list of such displays appears below. Every effort has been made to ensure the list is as accurate as possible, but some data has not been verified. Viewer help in adding to or correcting the list is welcome. Send info and images to webmaster@skyhawk.org
BUREAU NUMBERS and Construction Numbers ARE IMPORTANT. The only positive way to identify a particular Skyhawk is the six-digit Bureau Number (abbreviated "BuNo"). A BuNo is assigned only once and never repeated, even after an aircraft is retired or destroyed. IF a Skyhawk is accurately repainted, the model designation (A-4C, A-4E, etc.) and BuNo can be found painted on the aft end of the fuselage, beneath the horizontal stabilizer. I painted correctly, the last four digits of a BuNo. can also painted on the tail/vertical stabalizer. The offical BuNo of a Skyhawk will be found on embossed metal tags attached to the front instrument panel in the cockpit, and to the inside face of the nose wheel well, left front. It may also be found behind the ejection seat, or in other areas of the cockpit. On a/c tags the BuNo is the same as the Customers Serial Number. BuNo should be recorded in the paperwork (aircraft logbook, etc.) that accompanies an aircraft upon transfer. Also please note the MSN aka Construction Number (Manufacture five digit Serial Number) on the tag. Both of these numbers are important for identification.
Note that a three digit side number, usually painted on the side of the aircraft nose section, is a locally assigned squadron, unit, or station marking and is not meaningful in accurate identification of a particular aircraft. Also note that displayed a/c are sometimes modified/painted to represent another a/c. The BuNo painted on that tail may not be correct; check the embossed metal tags. If you are not allowed to approach the a/c, ask a museum employee to check for you.

SKYHAWKS WITH FOLDING WINGS?
A possible five Skyhawks were modified, or created from pieces and parts, to have folding wings and a folding tail for easy highway transport. These birds were used for recruiting and parades. It is believed at least one, BuNo 142180 was modified from a real bird. Another, marked as BuNo 142220, sporting a side of 500, may or may not be the original 142220 and is rumored to be presently located at Fighting Classics at Marana, AZ.
Alameda A-4s with folding wings had side numbers of 500, 501 and 502. NAS Jacksonville and NAS Atlanta (marked as 139934) also each had a Skyhawk display with clipped wings.

Three A-4A's were converted to recruiting tools at NAS Alameda and carried the nose numbers 500, 501 and 502. 500 carried BuNo 142220 ending up at Fighting Classics at Marana. That left two but NAS Jacksonville and NAS Atlanta also had folding wing A-4A's. Of those, 142180 ended up at the former NAS Wildwood in a very faded Blue Angels scheme. This had no undercarriage and was mounted on a low loader, so we believe that this was not 501. Also, it is rumored that at least two of these machines were "bitzers", composite machines built from bits off the scrapyard. The fact that your machine did not carry a proper Bureau number, suggests that this was one of those. I would suggest you log it as "108634"/501 including the inverted commas, with a c/n as unknown. In this case the clue is the hinged vertical stabilizer and what appears to be a hinge fold on the upper wing surface indicating this is one of three A-4As with a folding tail and wings. One was used by recruiters in the Lemoore area and yours may be the one in this photo taken by Martyn Swann in 2011. The BuNo on the tail is 142220 which is an A-4A BuNo and may, or may not, be correct. BuNo 142220 spent a lot of its service time in CA, but was at NAS Memphis when it was dropped from the inventory and there is some information that it ended up at Fighting Classics in Marana, AZ. Note from Kevin Koby, P.E.: "I remember one (maybe two?) Skyhawk being converted to folding wing on a low boy trailer to be used as recruiting tool when I was stationed at then NAS Memphis by the NATTC. That was in the mid 1970s. The work was done on the south side of the base by the aircraft maintenance department that maintained the aircraft the students trained on."

139945 A-4A and 147726 A-4C: the two dead airframes were recently saved from becoming beer cans out of the El Mirage wreckers yard, although "saved" will be in the eye of the beholder. A-4A BuNo 139945, one of the earliest A4s ever built along with A-4C BuNo 147726 were purchased by artist Mike Ross and they are being transformed into a fanciful sculpture to be hung in a Seattle subway station. The transmogrification involved slicing the airframes into segments, as if they had been run through a meat slicer set too thick, and suspending them facing each other separated by a few feet in the shape of birds, painted magenta and yellow. Hard to say if this qualifies as "on display" (and whether being made into beer cans would have been a better fate), but in the interest of completeness, here it is.

After being stricken on 25 FEB 1970, with last military service at NAS Los Alamitos, 142122 went to the "Combat Jets Fling Museum in Houston TX.

From their she went to "Warbird Heritage Foundation at Waukegan Regional Airport, Waukegan IL. in Y2007. She was restored to flight using parts from BuNo 148500, including her "Charlie" nose. 142122, although original a "Bravo", flies with her "Charlie" nose so she can represent BuNo 148609, the "Swartz MiG Killer".
DEC 1 2009: ;On Tuesday, December 1, 2009, shortly after 1:00pm, the Foundation Douglas A-4B Skyhawk made it's first post-restoration flight at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. The aircraft had last flown on May 4, 1992, more than seventeen and a half years ago. Not having encountered any serious problems during this test flight, the aircraft continued home to Waukegan Regional Airport, escorted by the Foundation L-39 Albatross, later that same day. This marks the end of an extended restoration project that began two and a half years ago.

Pic 1 "The Foundation A-4B Skyhawk is currently painted to represent aircraft BuNo 148609, an A-4C flown by LCDR Ted "T.R." Swartz, a member of Squadron VA-76, operating from the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31) during the Vietnam War. On May 1, 1967, LCDR Swartz shot down a MIG-17 over North Vietnam with an unguided ZUNI rocket. This was the only air-to-air kill by a Skyhawk during the Vietnam War."

23 JUN 2010: "It flew in the same squadron Gene Cernan was assigned to in 1958; he may have flown this actual aircraft (we're still trying to confirm if he did) (Gene was the last man to walk on the moon). We're planning to repaint 142200 in the colors of that squadron, VA-113, and have the jet back on its display pylon at the North Gate entrance to Alameda Point by end of summer this year, 2010. 06 DEC 2010: This Data plate ids the "Alameda A-4B" display as BuNo 142200, an A-4A (A4D-1) aircraft. The refueling probe indicated a "Bravo", not an "Alfa". From Tom: "Now the Fueling probe... I have been looking into that and cannot find the other end (Aircraft side which would go into the center tank, "the wingbox") which tells me it was put on for display purposes only as you indicated ... now I may be not looking in the correct area but we have access to the fuel tanks and no piping is visible that would indicate otherwise." Waiting in Hangar 5 at Alameda. These parts are needed to complete the restoral. A labor of love will restored this "Scooter" once again, ...a dedicated group put together a plan and restored this "gate guard" ... We are currently preparing the Skyhawk to be painted and we are in need of some advice. We want to get the paint scheme markings correct and color, the only photos I was able to obtain was VMA 211. 05 JUL 2015: 142829, was tied down outside a Navy recruiting facility at Ft. Wadsworth, Staten Island. Ft. Wadsworth, Floyd Bennett Field, Ft. Tilden, etc., all of which are part of the National Park Service's Gateway National Park system. I don't know how long it was there but in 1999 or so, and a few years after HARP was established, the National Park Service had it moved from Ft. Wadsworth to Floyd Bennett Field.
The airframe was a mess, the canopy was scratched and crazed, bird's nest were found in wheel wells, engine spaces, the plane was painted a dull gray and had no markings, etc. The cockpit instruments, the main gear doors and arresting hook, drop tanks, hard point attachments and so forth were also gone.
Some super talented HARP volunteers prepped the exterior, painted it gloss gull gray and insignia; white and added markings that were taken from a photo of VA-831 Skyhawk at Mayport, Florida during the Pueblo Crisis of 1968. VA-831 had been activated for the crisis and some of its aircraft were marked with USS John F. Kennedy in anticipation of the squadron joining the JFK air wing. VA-831 did not go aboard the JFK. After several weeks the squadron returned to Floyd Bennett.
Over the past few years I've added the legend 7R to the vertical stabilizer, covered over other chipped or faded markings, highlighted numbers, refreshed the national insignia, etc. The most effort was put into restoring the canopy Plexiglas. Various grits of sandpaper, polishing creams, marathon buffing sessions, etc., have improved the clarity 1,000 per cent. After refurbishing the ejection seat I added a mannequin wearing flight suit, Mae West, parachute, flight helmet and mask.
Beneath the canopy on the left side I've added Lt. Cmdr. John F. Tylunas's name. He died in an A4 accident during the Pueblo activation. Lt. Cmdr. Tylunas was a former USMC F-8 Crusader pilot who, after leaving the Marine Corps, joined Pan American and transferred his commission to the Navy. Interestingly, Lt. Cmdr. Tylunas enlisted in the USMC after high school and became an aviation electronics technician.; He then took USAFI correspondence courses in math and applied for and was accepted into the Marine Aviation Cadet program in 1954. He was commissioned into the USMC; flew with a VO squadron for a time before transitioning to Crusaders. That probably doesn't happen often today.
Below the cockpit on the right side I will add Lt. Col. John V. Henshall's name. Lt. Col. Henshall, an American Airlines pilot, died flying a VMA-131 Skyhawk at MCAS Cherry Point in 1964. Lt. Col. Henshall was awarded two DFCs while flying F9F Panthers during the Korean War. I've marked the vertical stabilizer with VMA-131 and red and gold trim.
Major renovations are scheduled to be done to Hangar B. They were to start last month; still waiting. The aircraft are indoors. We've covered them as best we can until we are allowed back into the hangar which is projected to be the end of October. Instrument panel work, finishing touches etc., on 2829 will have to wait until we can get back inside. Best regards, Marty Malone

In October of 2006 the National Museum of Naval Aviation(Y2007: Richard lane; A "Charlie" dressed in Blue Angel colors awaits restoration on the museum's restoration flight line. The Blue Angel's flew "Foxtrots", so this bird never flew with the unit but was painted to represent the "Blues". This bird is destined for Fort Worth, TX. ) offered up A-4C 147715 to OBA/FACM as part of their perpetual loan program. In June of 2007 a team led by Johnnie Eller went down to P'Cola to ship this great FAC treasure. What they found was an old veteran travelling under false orders in a Blue Angels paint scheme. Johnnie Eller and his team painstakingly disassembled our "Scooter" and brought her back to Cowtown. There the first order of business was to return her to a proper scheme that was fitting to her SEA/Cold War heritage. Today in horrendous Texas heat and humidity, Johnnie's team (after three long hours and a frozen landing gear) reassembled her back on her gears. May 2014: From "HIDE": I've been working this one for over a year now, but thanks to PO1 Mike Bean, it's finally done. The first "volunteers," a senior chief and first class, came out to the airplane at Heritage Park and seemed enthusiastic, but that was short lived and my emails to them dropped into black holes. During that early phase, I'd already coordinated with the NAS JAX CO and his staff, along with ADM Mark "Lobster" Fitzgerald, who was the original driving force as head of ANA....also on the board at the Naval Aviation Museum, who owns the airplanes. I had all the environmental issues nailed down, along with a legal perspective of our role as the SA.
A new CO...more pressure from Lobster and some good response from the Ops O, "Lumpy" McManus and his staff. PO1 Bean is a communications tech for Lumpy, but has his own paint gear, is a self starter type, not afraid of work and jumped on the project in his spare time. He was able to convince a few volunteers to come out every now and then.
Mike Bean and I have been tied at the hip buying supplies and working on the Charlie for the past 9 months or so. ...even gave him a ride in the RV to go see the A-4C at Sanford. He'd never been in a light plane, much less upside down.
We had Bean at the ANA lunch Tuesday, along with the new NAS CO, "Cowboy" Undersander. From the Skyhawk Assn., I presented the framed photo below and gave the attached letter of appreciation to CAPT Undersander, who will endorse it for Bean's service record. ANA presented a plaque and citation.
In the middle of this effort, NAS JAX wrote a base instruction to cover the maintenance of display airplanes. Now, individual squadrons/units at the base have "adopted" airplanes at Heritage Park....the airplane "petting zoo. This weekend, restoration of the H-60 is underway.
For a frame of reference in these restorations that the SA supports, the total cost of this restoration was around $800, all spent on supplies. On the flip side, if this project had been contracted out, it would have cost many thousands of dollars.
We used acrylic enamel automobile paint. It was an all volunteer effort. I made all the mechanical repairs, like bolting the RAT doors closes and such, including a sheet metal repair to the leading edge of the left horizontal stab. The Skipper permitted me to remove the drop tanks, so we stored them in a nearby H-3. Bean did most of the work by himself, lots of prep work and all the painting....hauled work stands back and forth over the months. The rest of us logged a fair amount of time supporting him with masking tape and sandpaper.

Capt Undersander, With your support, the A-4 Skyhawk Association has been coordinating with PO1 Michael Bean for a number of months in the restoration of NAS Jacksonville’s A-4C Skyhawk on display at Heritage Park.
As you know, this restoration got off to a shaky start this past year. There was little progress until PO1 Bean volunteered to take charge of the project. Though regularly plagued by bad weather last winter, he made the most of the days he had available. Weather became more moderate with the arrival of spring and he was often found working on the airplane on weekends and any other day he could find spare time. He regularly motivated others to volunteer their time and routinely kept me appraised of the progress. The Skyhawk Association purchased the paint and other supplies, but often, when PO1 Bean needed supplies, he used personal funds with no expectation of being reimbursed. Today, I can report that the Skyhawk restoration is complete and sets an example of excellence for future restorations in the park.

The aircraft honors the Air Force's participation in the war for the Malvinas (Falklands) and bears the name of Alferez G. Isaac. The British ship HMS Avenger is shown on the nose as Argentina believed at the time they had sunk her, but that ship had managed to survive the conflict. That A-4F was purchased by Argentina for parts, and its front panel ended up in this display.

The RNZAF has on loan for their musuem, from the U.S.N., an A-4L aircraft (BuNo 149516) that is displayed as NZ6207, which was lost in a crash.
"This aircraft is on Long Term Loan from the United States Navy in an agreement arranged by McDonnell-Douglas in 1987. It had been reconfigured to A-4L specifications and came from the stock at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, and was transported to New Zealand by C-130 Hercules. Considerable work was carried out by the Museum's Technical Section to reconfigure the aircraft to early A-4K specifications as operated by the RNZAF in the early 1970s. The aircraft is displayed as NZ6207 - the original aircraft being lost after engine failure in October 1974."

"It is painted it in the VA-46 Clansmen colors from the USS Forrestal WESTPAC cruise of 1967. The MODEX used on the airplane is that of AA 416, BuNo 149996, which was lost in the fire aboard Forrestal that year. The display, dedicated to those who lost their lives in the fire, was unveiled in a Veterans Day ceremony at the museum.
The USS Forrestal Association Historian, Ken Killmeyer, put me in touch with the museum's curator, Ben Kristy, with whom I corresponded concerning facts surrounding the 1967 accident. During those discussions, I decided to travel to Oregon to attend the event. Later, Ben honored me with an invitation to speak to the audience from the perspective of my experiences in the A-4 and as a Forrestal fire survivor.
The A-4E is a beautiful restoration and along with many other historic airplanes, is nestled under the wings of Howard Hugh's famous Spruce Goose seaplane. Glass display cases offer information on the airplane, as well as the USS Forrestal Fire. Future plans call for expanding the historical data and artifacts from the shipboard accident.
Shortly after arriving at the museum, I had the pleasure of meeting the men who restored the Skyhawk at the Evergreen facility in Phoenix, AZ, Mike McDougall and Mike Searle. It was fun to note that the first Commanding Officer of the Clansmen happened also to be a McDougal," who used his family tartan for the squadron patch and airplanes. Expressing my gratitude for such an accurate restoration, especially the detail in the tartan from those years, I discovered that the primary source for the 1967 paint scheme was the Skyhawk Association's web site. Last year, as the VA-46 "SDO" for the Skyhawk site, I had posted historical information, including graphics of the trademark tartan, as seen on the squadron's airplanes. It was both gratifying to know that my research had contributed to the accuracy of the restoration and ironic that I was also a guest speaker for the event. It is also indicative of the value of the Skyhawk Association's web site and their work to preserve the heritage of the A-4.
A number of USS Forrestal veterans attended the ceremony, some of who had been aboard during the fire. It was a special day to have this homage paid to them and their former shipmates. Before an audience of more than two hundred, I was humbled to speak for so many who suffered and those who died. It was also with mixed emotions that I spoke. The A-4 was such a great airplane to fly and I spent so many thrilling hours yanking it around the sky. However, it was a somber moment as I stood in front of this replica from my combat cruise, abruptly halted by the tragic accident of July 29, 1967. I spoke to both issues and was overwhelmed by a standing ovation and positive response from the audience. We Forrestal veterans later joined in a group around the base of the airplane and cut the unveiling ribbon.

"I have many flight hours in A/C TA-4F 152102 as a civilian flight test engineer. We called it KNOZY and used it to test HARM AGM-88 Seekers mounted in the nose. It is now on display at the China Lake Museum Air Park. Grew up loving A-4s and was lucky enough to have some flight time in one! Skyhawks Forever!" Jerry Senn.

She has been restored restored in the livery of Blue Angels TA-4J BuNo 158722, No.7, including such details as the boarding ladder housing in the port gun mount and the drag chute housing beneath the tail. The cockpit has also been restored.

VA-55 Reunion MAY 2011 On this past memorial day we had a VA-55 reunion in Millville, NJ for our 1970-1972 pilots. We dedicated the Skyhawk that was in the museum, bureau number 154200, to a deceased squadron-mate, LT John Born, a New Jersey resident. It was attended by 17.

The TA-4J Skyhawk was used for flight training at NAS Kingsville for 25 years, from 1969 to 1994, making it the most- used training aircraft at NAS Kingsville since the command’s commissioning on July 4, 1942. VC-8 BuNo 158137 rests in dignity at her final home on the Flight Deck of the U.S.S. Hornet.
Her only future travels will be between the Flight Deck and the Hangar Deck of this fine Museum. This great shot was taken by Erick McGarthy, one of the Hornet Volunteers, and provided to us by Janelle Sahr, another Hornet Volunteer.

TA-4J BuNo 158137 from the Redtails of Fleet Composite Squadron Eight (VC-8) taxis to a stop in front of Alaska Airlines’ maintenance facility after a ferry flight from Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico. The aircraft will be de-milled (rendered incapable of flight) and then put on display aboard the U.S.S. Hornet museum at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Alameda, Calif., a few miles away. VC-8, which has been awarded the Battle Efficiency Award and Search-and-Rescue Award this year (2003) is also in the running for the Chief of Naval Operation’s Safety Award. 158182 A-4M: Delaware Valley Hist. Avia. Assn, Willow Grove, PA (Feb 02)
On loan from the National Museum of Naval Aviation, NAS Pensacola, FL.
Some controversy surrounded this a/c; one party claimed they broke it down for shipment to "Indian Wells Bombing Range", and the museum claims they have it on display. Since the museum can check the cockpit tag, we know that the cockpit section is indeed 158182.
Update JUL 2013: confirmation that the a/c in question is indeed BuNo 158182, although equipped with a replacement tail. "In 1994, I was the Restoration Team manager for the DVHAA when we received 158182 from VMA-131. As you already know, 158182 had the top three feet or so of its vertical stabilizer taken off in flight when a turkey buzzard collided with the aircraft near Harrisburg, PA. The pilot managed to retain control of the aircraft and successfully brought the aircraft home despite the loss of one of the three rudder hinges. When the aircraft was stricken and given to DVHAA, another A4M had already been stricken and given to the base fire department for crash crew practice. VMA-131 swapped out the tail section from 158182 with the A4M given to the fire department, and we went on to complete a full restoration of 158182. Let me add that MSgt. Steve Baxter, who was VMA-131's Maintenance Chief at the time, personally gave me the logbooks for 158182 after the loan agreement between the National Museum of Naval Aviation and the DVHAA was completed and delivered. Today, I went over to the Wings of Freedom museum, joined by retired GySgt. Ed Miranda, who retired from active duty while serving with VMA-131, and stayed on with the squadron as a civilian tech rep working for Kay and Associates until VMA-131 flew it’s very last aircraft (BuNo 160024) to MCAS Cherry Point, into retirement. I have photographed both the data plate behind the ejection seat and the Buno plate found on the instrument panel, both showing 158182. ..." John Benton.
"The one we tore apart was a BuNo 158182, it was the real deal. The one that is painted up to look like it at DVHAA Museum, is really not! If you talk to some of the old timers there at the museum, they will tell you that we tore up the real deal that went in three pieces to the Indian Wells Bombing Range in Nevada, and has probably been blown to hell already! When we tore it apart, I read the BuNo right off the identification plate in the cockpit, and it was clearly painted into the tail section just forward of the sugar scoop. It was an old Marine Corps A-4M with the JFS exhaust just forward of 12R. The official disposition for our team was to tear it apart, put it on three trucks, and it would end up in Nevada, on a bombing range. "AOC(AW) Edward K. Hudson.

Webmaster's Note: In my opinion, both the museum and AOC Hudgon are correct. I believe what happened was that the Hudson team tore 158182 down for transport to the Indian Wells Bombing Range and the parts were temporary stored in a hangar. Later, the museum was granted custody of 158182 and found it in parts in said hangar. Since the bird had a damaged tail, a tail swap with another a/c was made.
