Events

June 1, 1955: Attack Squadron SEVENTY-SIX (VA-76) was established. The squadron was assigned the McDonnell F2H-2 Banshee.

January 1956: The Spirits were assigned the Grumman F9F-6 Cougar.

November to December 1956: During the Suez Crisis VA-76 Spirits were deployed on board USS Forrestal CVA 59, off the coast of the Azores awaiting a call to enter the Mediterranean if necessary.

May 1959: The Spirits were assigned the Douglas A4D-2 (A-4B) Skyhawk.

January 30, 1960: Lt.(jg) Orrie Griffith Hiett ejected safely from A4D-2 Skyhawk BuNo 145005. One of his most memorable experiences was when his plane caught fire during an in-air refueling maneuver, and he had to bail out into the Caribbean Sea.

June 27, 1960: Lt. Gerry L. Stark ejected safely from A4D-2 BuNo 142755. A small fishing vessel yesterday picked up a Navy pilot who ejected from his disabled jet fighter. The plane crashed near Knotts Island, NC. The pilot, Lt. Gerry L. Stark, was unhurt. He was on a training flight from the aircraft carrier Intrepid. A helicopter flew him to NAS Oceana. His plane developed engine trouble. The Progress-Index, Tuesday, June 28, 1960.

>June 1961: Deployed on board USS Intrepid CVA 11, in the Caribbean during the Dominican Republic crisis.>

6 Jan 1962: Executive Officer LCDR James T. Peddy, Jr. lost in A-4C BuNo 148454 in an operational launch accident in the Western Mediterranean Sea. 2031 A4D-1 BuNo 148454, pilot LCdr. James T. Peddy crashed into the sea shortly after being launched. Crash location: Lat. 40-23.1N, Long. 13-16.9E. 2033 USS Bordelon (DD-881) dispatched to conduct search. 2145 USS Bordelon (DD-881) recovered parts of aircraft and found positive evidence of pilot's death in crash. 2216 USS Bordelon (DD-881) concluded search. The pilot was not recovered. USS Intrepid deck log, Saturday, 6 January 1962.
From Tom Wimberly, CAPT UNS Retired.
At the time of his accident, I was a LT assigned to USS INTREPID (CVA-11) as Guided Missiles Division Officer. I was a regular bridge watch stander and was a qualified Officer of the Deck Underway. Looking in my INTREPID cruise book for the 1961-62 Med cruise, I find that on the Memorial page, I made the following note about Peddy's accident.
"I was on watch on the bridge as OOD when he launched in an A-4 one night. I watched each airplane after launch. He didn't seem to climb. I put my binoculars on him. His lights disappeared. I went to Captain J. Lloyd Abbot, Jr. and said, "Captain, did you ever see that aircraft climb?" He didn't answer. I went to the right wing of the bridge and started looking at the water. Sure enough, we soon passed an area of disturbed water to the starboard of the ship's path. I knew it had been caused by his crash; the water was green. I had seen that sort of green disturbed water in previous years when I had seen airplanes crash into the water close aboard (an AJ Savage, an A3D, and an F4D). I went to the squawk box, called CIC and told them to mark our position, that I thought we had a plane in the water. I went to the Captain and told him of my observation and call to CIC. He called Air Ops and they soon confirmed they had no radio contact with Peddy."

March 1962: The Spirits were assigned the Douglas A4D-2N (A-4C) Skyhawk.

October 19 through December 8, 1962: VA-76 deployed on board United States Ship Enterprise CVAN 65, off Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis and naval blockade.

Thornton, 25, was still missing Saturday after his A4C jet (BuNo 148455) crashed in the ocean Friday night shortly after take-off from NAS Oceana on an eastern coast training flight. Lt. Thornton's body has not been recovered. Longview News Journal, Sunday, February 2, 1964. Lt. J.W. Thornton, 25, was killed when his A4C jet crashed in the ocean Friday night shortly after takeoff from NAS Oceana on a training flight. The Montgomery Advertiser, Sunday, February 2, 1964.

March 1964: Deployed in the Mediterranean on board USS Enterprise CVAN 65, near Cyprus during Turk-Greek Cypriot crisis.

May 1, 1967: During sortie against Airfield at Kep, North Vietnam, LCdr. Theodore R. Swartz received a Silver Star for shooting down a North Vietnam MiG-17 aircraft with air-to-ground rockets. The event was the only enemy aircraft downed by an A-4 Skyhawk during the Vietnam conflict.

Mig Killing Skyhawk - A-4C BuNo.148609. The Experimental Aircraft Association displays a very accurate replica of CDR "T.R." Swartz's MiG killer A-4C at Wittman Field, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The flying Scooter replica is actually A-4B 142112, originally owned by the Combat Jets Flying Museum of Houston, Texas, it was flown on the airshow circuit for several years before being donated to the Experimental Aircraft Association about 1994. Here is the replica Scooter, August 10, 1999 by Frank Mirande.
On May 1, 1967, Lieutenant Commander Ted R. Swartz, USN in Douglas A-4C Skyhawk, NP-685, BuNo. 148609, of the VA-76 "Spirits" and flying from the USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31) shot down a MiG-17 over North Vietnam. The above picture is a display of VA-76 markings on a replica. The real BuNo.148609 (A-4C) is pictured with the VA-12 Flying Ubangis, using side number AJ-414 and flying from the USS Shangri-La CVA-38. Skyhawk 148609 is shown cleaned up after takeoff from NAS Atsugi, July 24, 1970. Black and white photograph by and courtesy of Takafumi Hiroe of Yokohama, Japan.
On April 12, 1989, at the Experimental Aircraft Association Oshkosh Flyin, professional photographer Robert S. DeGroat of Newark, Delaware arranged a quickie aerial photo session. Bob hooked a ride in a T-28 and arranged an aerial rendezvous with an A-4B Skyhawk and Russian MIG-21.
As you have probably noticed the Skyhawk pictured is an A-4B and not an A-4C, even though the BuNo is 148609 and the side number is NP-685. What we have here is A-4B BuNo.142112 that is painted to replicate T. R.'s A-4C Skyhawk.
Chuck Scott was the Skyhawk pilot and Hoot Gibson the MiG-21 pilot for the photo shoot. Both aircraft were then owned by the Combat Jets Flying Museum in Houston, Texas. Later both jets were donated to the EAA Aviation Foundation in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Two more pictures from Bob's photo opportunity: A-4B Skyhawk BuNo. 142113 in a port turn. And A-4B Skyhawk BuNo. 142113 -- the most beautiful shot for last! A-4B Skyhawk BuNo. 142113 pictures taken and shared by Robert S. DeGroat

July 14, 1967: Cdr. Robert Byron Fuller (CO) ejected (BuNo 147709) and was captured when his Skyhawk was hit by a SA-2 missile during a strike on the Co Trao railway and road bridge near Hung Yen. Cdr. Fuller was released from captivity on March 4, 1973.
