Cdr. Smith began flying combat missions in Southeast Asia off the aircraft carrier USS Hancock (CVA-19) in December 1965, took command of VA-212 in June 1966 and finished his first tour in July 1966. He returned for his second tour in February 1967 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31.) Cdr. Smith was forced to eject over North Vietnam on May 20, 1967 (his 200th combat mission) while leading an Alpha strike on the Bac Giang thermal power plant near Phu Lang Thuong, about 25 miles NE of Hanoi. Cdr. Smith was captured and was tortured to death by his North Vietnamese captors on May 21, 1967, and his remains were returned to the United States on March 13, 1974. He was buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD. Cdr. Smith was posthumously promoted to the rank of Captain and awarded the Navy Cross, the Navy's highest combat award, for extraordinary heroism. By his inspiring and courageous devotion to duty, Captain Smith upheld the finest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Capt. Smith is remembered on "The Wall," Panel 20E, Line 68.

VA-212 Rampant Raiders
The Rampant Raider patch was created September 4, 1956.
The Succulent Six Smart Bombers patch was created in 1967 by the six core members of VA-212 that deployed the Walleye in SEA. I believe the six were Homer Smith, Mike Cater, Dick Thomas, Bill Greene, Steve Briggs and Rex Wacowitz who were joined by Tom Brown from VX-5, China Lake. As for inspiration... "we were sitting around in the bar one night looking for a name and designing a patch and that’s what we came up with." The missile in the middle with a big eye on it represented the Walleye.

April 26, 1959 to December 2, 1959: The Rampant Raiders deployed on USS Lexington CVA 16 to WestPac flying the FJ-4B Fury.
April 1959: VA-212 became the first operational squadron to deploy with the Bullpup air-to-ground missile.
October 29, 1960 to June 6, 1961: VA-212 Rampant Raiders with CVG-21 deployed on USS Lexington CVA 16 to WestPac flying the FJ-4B Fury.
March 1961: USS Lexington CVA 16, with VA-212 Rampant Raiders embarked, was ordered to operate off the coast of Thailand as a result of the deteriorating position of Laotian government forces against the Communists. Units of Lexington's air group flew reconnaissance missions over Laos while on station.
June 20, 1961: The VA-212 Rampant Raiders were assigned the Douglas A4D-2 (A-4B) Skyhawk.
September 15, 1961: VA-212 Rampant Raiders moved to Naval Air Station Lemoore, California.
February 2, 1962 to August 24, 1962: The Rampant Raiders with CVG-21 deployed on USS Hancock CVA 19 to WestPac with the A4D-2 Skyhawk.
April 15, 1962: VA-212, embarked in USS Hancock CVA 19, operated off the coast of South Vietnam during the arrival of the first USMC advisory unit in the Republic of Vietnam.
May 16 through 20, 1962: Following the continued successes of the Pathet Lao forces against Laotian government forces, particularly along the border with Thailand, the Thai government requested United States support. A unit of the United States Marines landed in Bangkok and moved by air to Udorn. VA-212, along with other units of CVG-21, embarked in Hancock, operated in the area and were available to provide air support for the Marines if required.
June 7, 1963 to December 16, 1963: VA-212 with CVG-21 deployed in USS Hancock CVA 19 to WestPac flying the A-4B Skyhawk.
September 1963: VA-212, embarked in USS Hancock CVA 19, operated off the coast of Taiwan due to increased tensions between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China.
November 1963: USS Hancock, with VA-212 embarked, operated off the coast of South Vietnam following the coup that overthrew President Diem.
January 2, 1964: The VA-212 Rampant Raiders were assigned the Douglas A-4E Skyhawk.
June 24, 1964:Lt(jg). Barry Gastrock, 27, ejected safely from his VA-212 A-4E Skyhawk (BuNo 150133) when it crashed and burned about 5 miles NW of the NAS Lemoore runway starting a fire that burned two to three acres of stubble before being brought under control. The Fresno Bee, Thursday, 25 June 1964.
October 21, 1964 to May 29, 1965: The Rampant Raiders with CVW-21 deployed in USS Hancock CVA 19 to WestPac/Vietnam flying the A-4E Skyhawk. The VA-212 assigned side number was NP 2xx during this cruise. This was VA-212's first of eight Vietnam combat cruises.
February 7, 1965: Following the shelling of an American advisors' compound at Pleiku by the Viet Cong, VA-212 participated in reprisal attacks against targets in North Vietnam. During the strikes, named Flaming Dart I, VA-212's Skyhawks struck the Dong Hoi Barracks.
February 11, 1965: VA-212's Skyhawks participated in Flaming Dart II operations, reprisal attacks against the barracks at Chanh Hoa.
March through May 1965: The Rampant Raider Skyhawks participated in special operations in Southeast Asia, including the Rolling Thunder campaign, strikes against designated military targets in North Vietnam.
March 26, 1965: Cdr. K.L. Shugart ejected (BuNo. 150130) after his aircraft was hit on his 2nd run dropping SNAKEYE bombs on the Vinh Son radar site. The aircraft caught fire and suffered an electrical failure and he ejected about 10 miles offshore and was rescued by a USAF helicopter.
April 19, 1965: Lt(jg). Grade James Paul Shea of VA-215 flying a Douglas A-1H Skyraider BuNo. 139818, was shot down by North Vietnamese anti-aircraft fire. Lieutenant Junior Grade Shea was Killed in Action.
November 10, 1965 to August 1, 1966: VA-212 Rampant Raiders with CVW-21 deployed in USS Hancock CVA 19 to WestPac/Vietnam flying the A-4E Skyhawk. The VA-212 assigned side number was NP 2xx during this cruise. This was VA-212's second of eight Vietnam combat cruises.
March 1966: Rampant Raider aircraft participated in Operation Jackstay, providing combat air support for amphibious operations that cleared the Rung Sat zone southeast of Saigon.
March 27, 1966: LCdr. V.G. Donnelly ejected and was rescued, lost to flame-out. 1704 A4 Bureau No. 150128 of VA-212, Pilot LCdr. Donnelly, crashed into the sea bearing 280 deg. T 11 miles latitude 8-29.5N longitude 107-06.0E and sank in 21 fathoms of water. Pilot recovered by helicopter. 1713 Recovery complete. 2116 received injury report at 1700 this date while ejecting from his aircraft LCdr. V.G. Donnelly, 545128 received contusions of upper 2nd anterior portion of left shoulder. Treatment administered by medical officer. Disposition: Duty. USS Hancock deck log, Sunday, 27 March 1966.
April 6, 1966:Lt. Dennis Philip Cook killed, cat malfunction. 0534 A4E Bureau No. 152052, VA-212, Pilot Lt. Dennis Phillip Cook, crashed into the sea off the ships bow at latitude 17-56.0N, longitude 108-11.0E and sank in 50 fathoms of water. 0534 maneuvered to avoid aircraft. All engines stopped. 0539 c/s to 19 knots. USS Hancock deck log, Wednesday, 06 April 1966.
May 1, 1966: Lt. R.H. Mansfield ejected (BuNo. 151179) and was rescued by a Navy helicopter after firing a rocket from a LAU-3 which either hit his Skyhawk or fodded the engine while attacking a truck convoy 10 mile S of Vinh.
June 27, 1966: Lt. Gary Thiele ejected safely when his Skyhawk (BuNo 150000) caught fire on his way to a target in South Vietnam. 1109 received report of downed pilot position 11-00.0N, 108-34.0E, ships helo detached to proceed to area of downed pilot. 1205 A4E pilot Lt. Gary Thiele was recovered from the water and returned to Than Rang Air Field. USS Hancock deck log, Monday, 27 June 1966.
June 30, 1966: Cdr. Homer L. Smith, the squadron's Commanding Officer, was awarded the Silver Star for leading an air strike against the Bac Giang, North Vietnam POL facility.
October and November 1966: During the training cycle, VA-212 aircraft were modified to incorporate the Walleye weapons system thus becoming the first fleet unit equipped with the Walleye.
January 26, 1967 to August 25, 1967: VA-212 Rampant Raiders with CVW-21 deployed in USS Bon Homme Richard CVA 31 to WestPac/Vietnam flying the A-4E Skyhawk. The VA-212 assigned side number was NP 2xx during this cruise. This was VA-212's third of eight Vietnam combat cruises.
March 11, 1967: The Rampant Raider's commanding officer, Cdr. Homer L. Smith, conducted the first Walleye combat attack, striking the Sam Son Army Barracks. April 25, 1967: Lt(jg). Al R. Crebo ejected and was rescued after an SA-2 missile exploded close to his A-4E Skyhawk BuNo 151102 , NP 225 during an attack on an ammo depot on the outskirts of Haiphong. After flying out to sea on manual control he ejected near a Bon Homme Richard escort destroyer when the engine flamed out.

May 1, 1967: Lcdr Ted R. Swartz of the VA-76 Spirits flying A-4C Skyhawk BuNo. 148609, side number NP 685 shot down a MiG-17.
May 20, 1967: Cdr. Homer Leroy Smith (CO) ejected and was captured when his Skyhawk (BuNo 149652, NP 233) was hit by AAA and caught fire during a strike on the Bac Giang thermal power plant. Cdr. Smith died after a few days in captivity. Commander Homer L. Smith was awarded the Navy Cross for his action during strikes on the Bac Giang Thermal Power Plant on 19 and 20 May.
May 31, 1967: LCdr. Arvin Roy Chauncey ejected and was captured when his Skyhawk (BuNo 151113, NP 223) was hit by intense AAA about 20 mile NE of Kep. His aircraft was hit in the engine, caught fire and lost power.
May 31, 1967: Lt(jg). M.T. Daniels ejected and was rescued by the SAR Destroyer's Seasprite helicopter after his Skyhawk (BuNo 151183, NP 229) was hit by AAA about eight miles NE of Kep. He headed out to sea in search of a tanker but couldn't rendezvous as his radio was inop. Unable to refuel he found a SAR destroyer and ejected when the engine flamed out.
July 12, 1967: LCdr. J.H. Kirkpatrick ejected and was rescued by a Navy SAR helicopter after his Skyhawk (BuNo 151181, NP 228) was hit in the port wing and fuselage by ground fire on his way to a strike on the railway at Mai Truong.
July 20, 1967: Cdr. Fredrick H. Whittmore (XO) ejected over the sea 60 miles east of Hon Gay and was rescued after his Skyhawk (BuNo 151119, NP 222) was hit by AAA during a strike on the My Xa POL storage site.
October 1967: The VA-212 Rampant Raiders were assigned the Douglas A-4F Skyhawk.
January 27, 1968 to October 10, 1968: VA-212 Rampant Raiders with CVW-5 deployed in USS Bon Homme Richard CVA 31 to WestPac/Vietnam flying the A-4F Skyhawk. VA-212 was assigned side number NF 5xx during this cruise. This was VA-212's fourth of eight Vietnam combat cruises.
February and March 1968: Rampant Raiders aircraft flew combat air support missions for the Marines under siege at Khe Sahn.
May 22, 1968: LCdr. R.S. Thomas ejected safely (BuNo 154974, NF 502) and was rescued by USS Halsey (DDG-97) HC-7 Seadevils UH-2A Seasprite, 16 miles 355⁰ from Vinh, 0. 5 miles off shore, lost to AAA.
May 28, 1968: Lt(jg). Hugh Durden (BuNo. 154982) experienced engine loss, or perhaps fire, during a night combat sortie en route to control by "Moonbeam", the orbiting command post C-130 which assigned FAC control missions to Yankee Station aircraft. He ejected off the coast of North Vietnam and was rescued after several hours in his life raft. From Steve Gray.
May 30, 1968: Lt. J.E. Killian ejected safely (BuNo 154174, NF 513) and was rescued by USS Halsey (DDG-97) HC-7 Seadevils Det. 110 SH-3A Sea King 38 miles, 72⁰ from Vinh, 30 miles off shore, engine ingested rocket debris.
April 24, 1969: Lt(jg). Leon A. Linkey was killed... An A4 Skyhawk (BuNo 155016) from NAS Lemoore crashed into the sea eight miles west of Pt. Arguello in Southern California. The Argus, Saturday, April 26, 1969. A search for the body of Navy Lt. Leon A. Linkey, presumably killed when his Navy jet crashed into the sea off Point Arguello Thursday night, has been called off. His plane crashed about 6:40 p.m. Thursday when he was returning from a missile firing exercise over the Pacific. According to another pilot in the formation, Linkey’s aircraft appeared to explode in the air. Searchers later found an oil slick and some debris but the body of the pilot has not been located. Researching Lt j.g. Leon A. Linkey, USN, reportedly killed in explosion of A4F flying in a group of 4 out of NAS Lemoore enroute PMTC. Newpaper report in Fresno Bee Republican 25 Apr 1969 states the pilot was missing, no chute observerd, after Skyhawk exploded at 2,000 feet. August 2, 1969 to April 15, 1970: The Rampant Raiders with CVW-21 deployed in USS Hancock CVA 19 to WestPac/Vietnam flying the A-4F Skyhawk. VA-212 was assigned side number NP 3xx during this cruise. This was VA-212's fifth of eight Vietnam combat cruises.
February 9, 1970: Lt. John Arthur Griner was killed when he ejected as his Skyhawk (BuNo 155005, NP 307)) veered off the runway when he diverted to Da Nang with hung ordnance after a strike mission, 09 February 1970. 1700 Held Memorial Service for Lt. John A. Griner, VA-212. USS Hancock deck log, 12 February 1970. I recall that CAG mandated we divert to Da Nang if we had hung bombs rather than jettisoning the TER. Westpac had a shortage of the triple ejector racks. John complied. At touchdown the aircraft started to leave the runway and John ejected into an arresting gear stanchion as the aircraft rolled. From Kip Burton, 27 February 2016. It was his second hop of the day. He blew a main tire on the cat stroke. He had a hung bomb and diverted to Da Nang, but didn’t execute a field arrestment with the blown tire and on touchdown the aircraft left the runway and headed for the arresting gear unit. It appears that he did not initiate ejection until he hit the arresting gear installation because the airplane was inverted and the seat took him into the ground or into the arresting gear unit itself. March 8, 1970: Lt. Gary B. Smith ejected safely when A-4F BuNo 154994 exploded and crashed into the sea off the starboard bow at latitude 18-08.0N and longitude 107-48.9E and sank into the sea in 44 fathoms of water at 0835. March 15, 1970: LCdr. R.W. Hunter ejected (BuNo 155044, NP 307) and was rescued by Hancock's helicopter about 90 miles NE of Dong Hoi after his Skyhawk was hit by 37mm AAA on a daylight Steel Tiger strike on a section of road near Ban Topen. 1435 A-4 in the water off the starboard beam at (130 deg.) at five (5) miles. Ships position 17-51.9W 107-50.9E. Water depth 43 fathoms. 1441 Pilot out of water. 1503 Received information on Pilot Name: LCdr Hunter. Plane side number 307. Plane BuNo 505044 (sic). Squadron VA-212. Medical report Pilot alright scratched knee taking X Rays. Weather condition clear sky with visibility of five (5) miles Sea temp 75 Air temp 77 with three foot seas aircraft downed by enemy fire and could not be controlled. October 22, 1970 to June 3, 1971: VA-212 with CVW-21 in USS Hancock CVA 19 deployed to WestPac/Vietnam flying the A-4F Skyhawk. VA-212 was assigned side number NP 3xx during this cruise. This was VA-212's sixth of eight Vietnam combat cruises.
January 7, 1972 to October 3, 1972: VA-212 with CVW-21 in USS Hancock CVA 19 deployed to WestPac/Vietnam flying the A-4F Skyhawk. VA-212 was assigned side number NP 3xx during this cruise. This was VA-212's seventh of eight Vietnam combat cruises.
April 1972: With the North Vietnamese invasion of South Vietnam, the Easter Offensive, the squadron concentrated its strikes in the area of An Loc, South Vietnam. It provided combat air support for United States and South Vietnamese ground forces defending the city.
May 1972: VA-212 participated in Operation Linebacker I, heavy air strikes against targets in North Vietnam.
May 25, 1972: Cdr. Henry Hooker Strong (VA-212 CO) was killed during a strike on the Ben Thuy road bridge three miles S of Vinh. His aircraft (BuNo 155045, NP 301) was last seen by his wingman as he rolled in on the target. There wasn't any sign of wreckage or an ejection and was most likely lost to AAA.
July 9, 1972: Cdr. Frank Gifford Green (BuNo 154972, NP 312) was killed when he flew into the ground while attacking a truck on a road near Dam Khanh, 50 miles S of Hanoi in a light haze at night.
September 6, 1972: Lt. W. F. Pear in Rampant Raider A-4F Skyhawk BuNo 155021, NP 304 was shot down by North Vietnamese anti-aircraft fire. Lt. W.F. Pear rescued by USS Gridley (DLG-21/CG-21) HC-7 Sea Devils Det. 110 HH-3A Sea King 15 miles, 154⁰ from Thanh Hoa, five miles off shore, Hwy 1A.
March 12, 1973: Lt. Frank Schwab, 27, ejected safely when his NAS Lemoore based A4 Skyhawk (BuNo 155020) developed engine trouble while on a routine post maintenance check flight Monday. The plane crashed into a farmer's field 5 miles NE of Hanford and Schwab, attached to VA-212 at Lemoore, walked to a house and phoned the base to report the crash. He was picked up by a helicopter and returned to Lemoore. Bakersfield Californian, Wednesday, 14 March 1973. "The aircraft was going to be transferred to the Marines, so I was doing a maintenance test flight after heavy maintenance. I was headed to NAS Fallon at 18,000 feet and cleared to Fl230. I pushed the power up and heard a loud bang followed by the oil pressure dropping to zero, I declared an emergency and left the power back. The bearings ultimately froze the engine and I descended to about 8,000 feet, slowing to 150 knots and ejected. I later found the guy that packed my chute and bought him a bottle of Whiskey." May 8, 1973 to January 8, 1974: VA-212 with CVW-21 in USS Hancock CVA 19 deployed to WestPac/Vietnam flying the A-4F Skyhawk. VA-212 was assigned side number NP 3xx during this cruise. This was VA-212's eighth and last Vietnam combat cruise.
October and December 1973: With the outbreak of war in the Middle East between Israel, Syria and Egypt and the initiation of the Arab oil embargo, USS Hancock, with VA-212 embarked, was ordered to enter the Indian Ocean and operate in the Arabian Sea.
July 12, 1974: Capt. John Pryor Emmett Jr., was killed when his A-4F Skyraider (sic) (BuNo 155032 ) crashed in a big ball of flame 12 miles east of Hawthorne, NV Friday. The A-4F based at NAS Lemoore was temporarily assigned to NAS Fallon for training. Redlands Daily Facts, Saturday, July 13, 1974 and Bakersfield Californian, Tuesday, July 16, 1974. A young pilot with about 800 hours was scheduled for a low level navigation exercise flight of two A-4 Skyhawks and assigned as safety pilot and observer flying in the chase position while the other pilot was the flight leader. During the brief the chase pilot was instructed to keep the lead pilot in sight at all times and to ensure the safety of the flight. When told to maintain the same altitude as the lead he said something to the effect that "you'll probably see me below you." The lead pilot maintained an altitude of 200-400 feet and observed the chase pilot below him on several occasions. At one of the checkpoints the chase pilot acknowledged the leads radio transmission, but there was no visual sighting. Six minutes later at the next checkpoint there was no acknowledgment of the leads radio transmission and the lead pilot climbed in an attempt to gain visual or radio contact without success. Lead then began to retrace the route and requested SAR assistance and the crash site of the chase aircraft was located about two-thirds of the way up the side of a small hill where it had impacted at high speed in a slightly nose high attitude killing the pilot instantly. September 15, 1975: Lt(jg). Bruce Carrier, 25, (VA-212) was killed when his A-4 Skyhawk (BuNo 154185) crashed into the South China sea 50 miles SW of Cubi Point and three miles from the USS Hancock. Carrier was assigned to VA-212 aboard the USS Hancock. The Argus, Fremont - Newark, CA, Thursday, September I9, 1975 and The Transcript, Friday, September 19, 1975.
December 12, 1975: Attack Squadron TWO HUNDRED TWELVE (VA-212) was disestablished at Naval Air Station Lemoore.
