History: VFA-127's history goes back to NAS Moffett Field, CA when it was part of VF-124, the F-8 RAG squadron. It operated as a separate command in the same hangar as VA-125 and VF-124. All of us replacement pilots would go and get our 10 flight hours under the bag before we would begin our A-4 or F-8 transition.
The first time I see in my log book that I flew with them Was 4 April of 1960 at NAS Moffett Field. The stamp in my book says VF-124 Jet instrument Training completed on 15 April 1960.
On July 24, 1961, when an advance party of one officer and 17 enlisted men arrived at the newly commissioned Naval Air Station Lemoore, CA, as the nucleus of a Jet Instrument Training Unit.
Designated as Detachment ALPHA -- the first unit to conduct scheduled flying from the jet air station -- its primary mission was all-weather jet instrument training for fleet replacement pilots and fleet squadron pilots of the Naval Air Force, Pacific Fleet.
I flew with VF-124 Det A again 15-25 May of 1962 while I was assigned to VA-93 as the Asst. Ops and Training Officer. The detachment was re designated Attack Squadron (VA) 127 on June 15, 1962.
I was assigned to VA -127 in 68-69 as the Flight Training Officer. We were flying the TA-4F/J. We did a lot of jet transition of VP pilots who were moving into A-4's because of the shortage of A-4 pilots. We started the adversary training also at that time. We were still the primary instrument training squadron on the West Coast.
We began working on a jet spin training program also at this time. The A-7 squadrons were loosing aircraft in Vietnam due to stall spins at high gross weights. Two of us, the Safety Officer and myself, went to NAF Monterey to check out in the T-1A. We were slated to receive two of the T-1A's, however that program fell through. VA-125 was doing A-7A/B training and VA-122 was doing A-7E training.
In 1974-77 while I was OpsO, XO and CO of VC-7 at NAS Miramar our support squadron was VC-13 in New Orleans. We could not handle all of the requests for air support missions from Surface Force Pacific so we requested that NavResFor supply a det from VC-13 to augment us at Miramar. That worked so well that they were given a home port change to Miramar. VC-13 got right in on the adversary work as well as target towing and radar calibration flights. VC-13, VF-126 became the primary adversary squadrons at NAS Miramar. VC-7 had all we could handle with the target towing missions.
VA-127 was again re-designated VFA-127 on March 1, 1987, in keeping with its new role as the Pacific Fleet adversary squadron responsible for training Naval Strike Fighter pilots in air-to-air combat.
In October 1987, the squadron moved to NAS Fallon, making VFA-127 the only Navy squadron permanently based in Nevada.
Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 127, the Navy's last active-duty adversary squadron at Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon, NV, was disestablished on 23 March 1996. The adversary role performed by the "Desert Bogeys" at NAS Fallon since 1987 was assumed by the "Fighting Saints" of Fighter Squadron Composite 13. While VFA-127 flew both F-5's and F/A-18's in the adversary role, VFC-13 only flew F-5's. Most of the Hornets from VFA-127 were transferred to the reserve force. July 24, 1961: VF-124 Detachment ALPHA, from NAS Moffett Field, began conducting flights out of the new NAS at Lemoore CA. It became the basis of a Jet Instrument Training Unit for fleet replacement pilots for the Pacific Fleet.

June 15, 1962: Detachment ALPHA is re-designated VA-127.

September 1966: VA-127 changes aircraft to the TA-4 Skyhawk

1968-69: VA-127, the primary instrument training unit for the West Coast, adds adversary training to their mission.

February 24, 1969: LCdr. James W. Lucchessi, 34, an instructor, and Lt(jg). Harlow W. Ralls, 27, are missing while on a flight south of Cedar Grove, CA. Their NAS Lemoore based TA-4F Skyhawk (BuNo 154654) was reported missing Monday at 2 pm. when it vanished from the radar screens while flying east of Porterville in Tulare County, in mountains 6,000 to 9,000 feet high. Oakland Tribune, Wednesday, February 26, 1969. A memorial service will be held for LCdr. James W. Lucchessi Saturday at 3 pm. Lucchessi was the pilot of a Navy plane which vanished February 24 and presumedly crashed in an uninhabited region of the Sierra Nevada mountains in northern California. After search efforts failed he was listed as deceased. Waukesha Daily Freeman, Friday, May 16 1969. NAS Lemoore ... the Navy believes the aircraft wreckage spotted near Mineral King Valley Sunday may be that of a training jet lost in the High Sierra on Feb. 24. Nevada State Journal, Wednesday. September 17, 1970: Lt. Robert B. Moore, 29, ejected safely when his NAS Lemoore VA-127 A-4E Skyhawk (BuNo 151154) crashed Thursday about 8 miles NE of Sparks, NV. Nevada State Journal, Friday, September 18, 1970. Nevada State Journal photo.

March 22, 1971: Lt. Sherman L. Schuele and Lt(jg). Richard Clayton ejected safely when their A-4 fighter (BuNo 153686) crashed and burned Monday at Edwards AFB while on a routine instrument training flight from NAS Lemoore. Independent, Tue., Mar. 23, 1971.

August 21, 1971: Lt. James Verdi and an unidentified pilot from NAS Lemoore were killed Wednesday when their light jet attack plane (BuNo 154636) crashed in a wooded area 10 miles south of the Mineral King wilderness area in the Sierra Nevada range during an instrument and orientation training flight. The Bakersfield Californian, Friday, Aug, 27,1971. The instructor and student manned a TA-4J for a day instrument training flight. Departure was normal and they arrived at the designated training area which was over mountainous terrain. Once in the area no further communications were heard. About 45 minutes after departure two forest rangers saw a Navy jet in the dirty configuration flying straight and level up a valley. They watched for about ten seconds until it passed out of view and the engine sound suddenly stopped. About the same time a forest fire lookout reported smoke and a possible forest fire. It turned out to be the crash site of the TA-4J below a ridge line at 8,000 feet. Evidence indicated the TA-4J was in level flight and the port wing hit a tree moments before it hit the ridge. Although a last minute ejection was attempted time and distance precluded successful completion prior to impact. NAN, Pettibone, March 1973.

September 20, 1973: Lt. Roy Segars, 29, and Ens. John Ross, 25, ejected safely from their TA-4 Skyhawk (BuNo 153687) before it crashed yesterday 7 1/2 miles west of George AFB yesterday. They were on a routine training flight from the San Joaquin Valley Air Station when their Skyhawk became disabled and were rescued by a USAF helicopter. October 1973: The Flight of the Echos to Israel. Page 35 of the Spring 2006 issue of "The Hook" asked about the unsubstantiated but frequently heard story (that) VA-45 Det 1 flying A-4L (re-worked Charlies with a hump) Skyhawks on board Roosevelt in 1973 delivered same to Israel. Perhaps VA-45 delivered some of the 65 A-4s which were sent between 1971 and 1973, but I believe the ones which arrived in Israel were all Echos. There were 29 flown there in October of 1973 and the following is how I remember a part of that delivery.
It was an AOM in early October 1973 when the skipper of VA-127 asked for volunteers to fly a special mission which would involve some danger. Nearly all of us instructors raised our hands. He proceeded to brief us on the general scope of the flights which was to deliver A-4s to Israel. Cdr. Tulley had some of the details, but he said all he knew for sure was we were to fly many of our own aircraft to Norfolk and we would receive further briefing there. Pack for a week he said.
VA-127 had been the instrument training squadron in Lemoore for quite some time. The A-7 drivers on their way to VA-125 or VA-122 were obligated to make a stop and fly our TA-4s under the bag to sharpen their scan (or humiliate these newly minted naval aviators). VA-125 switched from an A-4 RAG to an A-7 RAG when the powers that be decided no more A-4s would be going on cruises. Of course A-4s kept cruising, so VA-127 became the A-4 RAG to train pilots for each successive A-4 Last Annual Cruise. We had quite a cadre of fleet experienced A-4 pilots who taught tactics and CQed all sorts of junior and senior pilots who were slated to fly the Scooter on various 27C carriers still floating about in WestPac. When we became the RAG we got the latest version of A-4Es and Fs including the P408 powered model which the Blue Angels flew after being "trained" at VA-127. Some of our flights demoing asymmetrical slat extension for the Blues were quite colorful, but that's another story.
On October 17th we manned aircraft for the one stop hop to NAS Norfolk. Before doing so, we were issued new flight suits, flight jackets and parachute bags without any patches or insignia on them. The scope of the operation became more apparent when we saw how many A-4s were parked outside the Rework Facility there. Before long we were invited into a large briefing room where an Admiral took the podium and looked out at a small sea of JO faces. He gave us the plan and we asked a bunch of questions. We had another day or so while the Rework Facility took out the electronics we did not want to hand over to the Israelis. They also painted out all the markings on the A-4s except for the single star & bar on each side of the aft fuselage.
The plan was to launch in flights of 12 for the Azores with two KC-135s and one pathfinder and an extra to tanker for us and then return to the East Coast. The flight from Norfolk to the Azores turned out to be my longest A-4 flight at 5.5 hours. We spent the night in Lajes and managed to find the O'Club. Meanwhile the maintenance guys had to try to straighten out a fuel probe or two which became slightly bent during our refueling with the 135s. The drogue on the 135s did not retract like the one on our buddy stores and some of the training command ploughbacks who had joined us had never refueled from anything. They fixed the bent probes by doing some pull-ups with a few of the heaviest guys.
Next day we launched with loaded guns the infamous A-4 20 MM. It held a couple of hundred rounds I think, but usually jammed after two one each side. We were to rendezvous with a bunch of C-130 Marine tankers just outside of Gibraltar. To do so we of course had to descend and slow way down. As we passed by Libya an unnamed JO decided to make sure his guns actually worked. Of course he had to break right and pull up so as not to waste the rounds for the test.
We were heading for the Roosevelt off the coast of Italy. Aboard Roosevelt we were lucky enough to have another admiral brief us on the final leg of our mission. The most important part of which we all listened to very carefully. Israeli F-4s would escort us from their ADIZ to the intending landing field. We thought Wahoo - some fighters to eat for lunch. In those days the only time an F4 was nearly invisible was when he was in burner and then he was out of gas. Anyway we launched and let the F4 find us and we landed without incident. I landed last because there was some doubt as to the status of my tail-hook. The dash-pot did not keep the hook from bouncing (that was the reason for my bolter the night before on Roosevelt, that's my story and I'm sticking to it), so by the time I landed the first two or three aircraft already had the stars & bars painted out and the Star of David as a new marking. When I was taxiing in I saw several gun emplacements with laundry hanging from the AAA barrel. Around the emplacement was a family (No shit - kids were playing in the yard). It seemed to me a family was assigned to provide the manning for this defensive piece of the war. No wonder the Israelis fight so hard they literally were totally involved.
Next stop was the O'Club. Yep the Israelis followed our USAF flying brethrens lead and built the club before the runway. Our short stay at the O'Club was surreal and welcoming and thankful. As we ate the food they laid out for us and did our best to drink all their booze and we chatted with the pilots of the local squadrons. One guy said excuse me in the middle of a conversation and said he had to go brief for the afternoon launch. He had been drinking iced tea. Of course the same guy who took a shot at Muammar Khadafi tried to bribe one of their guys to take him in the back seat of the TA-4 they had. He would have had a better chance if he had been drinking iced tea like they were. We were then bussed over to climb on-board an empty C5 for a free ride to Maguire AFB. After several hours we all woke up and wandered about the aircraft a bit. Some of us ended up hitting baseballs in the cavernous empty space which likely had held needed supplies to prosecute a war just a few hours before. We all made our way home from Andrews by comair and enjoyed our brand new leather jackets. For some reason we did not consider the implications when we were issued new gear without any markings. Thankfully no one had to land someplace embarrassing. Sure enough we were home one week after we left. "Boom" Powell"

August 7, 1987: Lt. Steven Moreau, 30, was killed in a July 30 (1987) crash of his A-4 Skyhawk in Saline Valley... Fresno Bee, 15 August, 1987. Possibly the A-4 that ran out of fuel during a training exercise closer to China Lake attempted a dead stick landing and lost his life. I was helping train pilots at NAS Lemoore at the time. VFA-127 is the aggressor squadron and was flying out of Lemoore and Fallon at the time. VFA-127 TA-4J BuNo 153504 was destroyed at Lemoore when aircraft failed to return from fam solo flight. Wreckage located during SAR. 07 August 1987. 1 fatality. Naval Safety Center via Jim Winchester.

August 25, 1987: Lt. Thomas Rullman, ejected safely from his A-4E Skyhawk when it crashed about three mile north of NAS Lemoore shortly after take-off Tuesday. Fresno Bee, 26 October 1987. VFA-127 A-4E BuNo 150007 was destroyed at Lemoore when pilot ejected immediately after takeoff. Aircraft crashed into ground. 25 August 1987. 0 fatalities. Naval Safety Center via Jim Winchester.

October 1987: VFA-127 moves from NAS Lemoore to NAS FAllon, and is the only permanently based squadron there.

October 6, 1988:Lt. George Bodine Jr., ejected safely from his disabled VFA-127 A-4E Skyhawk which crashed about 3 mile SW of Gabbs Airport Thursday evening and was picked up by a SAR helicopter. The plane, acting the part of an aggressor for routine combat training, crashed at about 6 pm. Reno Gazette-Journal, Friday, 07 October 1988. VFA-127 A-4E BuNo 151090 was destroyed at Nevada when aircraft crashed into ground during local fam. flight. 06 October 1988. 0 fatalities. Naval Safety Center via Jim Winchester.
