Naval Air Facility (NAF) China Lake usually had one or more of each aircraft type in the United States Navy inventory excluding some Helo's and recon aircraft. NAF Pilots, Plane Captains, maintenance personnel etc. supported the various aircraft assigned to the Civilian Project Teams. Pilots were assigned to the various projects and flew the planes that supported those projects. Plane Captains usually had a half dozen or so different pilots flying their plane never knowing who would fly until the flight schedule came out in the morning. NAF China Lake line personnel also supported NALF San Clemente. The VX-5 Vampires squadron was an independent command co-located with the Naval Air Facility.

Events

April 1943: The Hedron 14 Experimental Unit, a special aircraft ordnance group, was formed in San Diego to support the rocket test work of the California Institute of Technology.

December 1943: Aviation Ordnance Development Unit No. 1 (AODU-1) was commissioned under the cognizance of Commander Fleet Air, West Coast.

02 January 1944: The first contingent of AODU-1 personnel arrived at Inyokern.

February 1944: Carrier Aircraft Service Unit No. 53 (CASU-53) was assigned to NOTS.

10 May 1944: Aviation Facilities at Inyokern were established by the Secretary of the Navy as the U.S. Navy Air Facility, Inyokern, CA, and the name Harvey Field, in honor of the late LCdr Warren W. Harvey was officially adopted 28 June 1944.

05 June 1944: AODU-1 was officially moved to NOTS.

15 May 1945: The Naval Air Facility was moved to China Lake, CA.

30 May 1945: The new airfield was named Armitage Field in honor of Lt. John M. Armitage who lost his life when his SB2C Helldiver, crashed at NOTS Inyokern. Immediately after he fired an 11.75" Tiny Tim in a 20-degree dive at a range of 1500 yards his plane nosed over, passed through the rocket's blast cone and crashed.

02 June 1945: The first project flight was flown from Armitage Field.

29 April 1947: Placed as a separate command under the military command and coordination of the CO of NOTS and under the management control of BuOrd.

05 May 1947: Armitage Field was commissioned under the official title of U.S. Naval Air Facility, U.S. Naval Ordnance Test Station, Inyokern, CA.

May 1954: A target drone unit was officially established as a permanent part of NAF.

26 July 1955: In a title change reflective of its actual physical location, NAF was officially redesignated U.S. Naval Air Facility, China Lake, CA.

01 July 1961: The administration and support of the Auxiliary Landing Field, San Clemente Island, were assigned to the NAF CO.

29 Jan 1963: -- A Walleye television glide bomb, released from a YA-4B, made a direct impact on its target in the first demonstration of its automatic homing feature.

11 June 1965: Lt. Douglas S. Mayfield, 33, lost his life on when his A-4C Skyhawk (BuNo 148524) was struck by target debris while on a photo mission over "B" Range.

August 12, 1965: LCdr W. Odman was forced to eject as his Naval Test Station China Lake A4D (BuNo 142787) landed in turbulent winds at Michael Army Airfield (Dugway, UT) Thursday. The aircraft received minor damage and coasted to a stop on the 8,000 foot landing strip. The Ogden Standard Examiner, Friday, 13 August 1965.
NAF pilots life saved by RAPEC seat, 09 September 1965, Rocketeer, continued. 142787 was disassembled, trucked to O&R Alameda & repaired.

03 April 1970: Lt. Gerald Hall was killed when his TA-4F BuNo 153494 rolled inverted on approach and crashed west of the runway during a landing at Richards-Gebaur AFB in Belton, MO. Backseater Leroy Neville ejected safely. Hutchinson News article. The blivet (drop tank converted to carry luggage etc.) collapsed and probably jammed the slat… According to other pilots etc. he disliked flying the TA-4 because of the delayed ejection for the front seater.

09 July 1970: Lt. Wayne T. Oxford ejected safely and the back seater Lt. Bill Weiler was severely injured when TA-4 153503 impacted the runway while simulating flame-out approaches.

01 December 1976 Naval Air Facility, China Lake, CA, was disestablished after more than 30 years as a separate command, and became part of the Naval Weapons Center; the mission, functions, and organization of the NAF are incorporated essentially unchanged into the new Aircraft Department of the NWC Test and Evaluation Directorate.

03 August 1978: The Naval Air Systems Command reported a major advance in the technology of escape systems. During the summer, the NWC at China Lake successfully tested a vertical-seeking ejection seat. While carrying a dummy crew member, the seat was fired downward from a suspended test module. It traveled downward less than 45 feet before reversing direction and traveling upward; it then parachuted safely to the ground. These tests demonstrated that the vertical-seeking seat would make it possible to safely eject upside down, within 50 feet of the surface, thus greatly increasing the safety envelope of ejection seats.

November 6, 1985: Cdr. Ron Miller and Maj. Tom White, USMC, ejected safely and parachuted into a clump of trees seconds before their TA-4 Skyhawk nose-dived into the ground off Route 623 near Helmet in King and Queen County at 4:55 p.m. The project pilots are assigned to NWC China Lake, CA and had just taken off from NATC Patuxent enroute to China Lake via Little Rock, AR. Daily Press (Newport News, VA), Thursday, 07 November 1985. Cdr. Ron Miller and Maj. Tom White, USMC, safely ejected after a loud explosion and the aircraft went out of control at 14,000 feet 30 miles east of Richmond, VA on departure from NATC Patuxent. NWC China Lake NTA-4J BuNo 152848 was destroyed at Richmond when aircraft became uncontrollable following inflight explosion. 06 November 1985. Aircrew ejected. Naval Safety Center via Jim Winchester.

08 May 1995 The Aircraft Department is disestablished and its personnel and functions incorporated into the newly created Naval Weapons Test Squadron (NWTS) China Lake, part of Test Wing Pacific of NAWCWPNS; the snake-wielding “dust devil” is adopted as mascot (although never officially approved).

01 May 2002 NWTSCL was redesignated Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Three One (VX-31).

NAF China Lake 14 MAR 1962: TA4D-1 BuNo 139937 after a ZUNI test went awry for Tony Tambini. Flight was to test a fix to address the failure of ripple & single fire at high altitude (35,000 feet). Supposed to be a single fire from each tube, but the Ordie set the pods to ripple fire. At altitude Tony fired a single from one of the pods accompanied by a flash & swoosh as the first ZUNI fired followed by a second flash swoosh and a loud thump as the second went off. The thump was the noise it made as it impacted the bottom of the fuselage under the cockpit. The fix didn't work and the first Zuni ripped the aft end of the ZUNI tube from the pylon and left it pointing in the direction of the cockpit and the second one almost got him. Fortunately the second one ripped the tube further from the pylon severing the umbilical cord between the pylon and the ZUNIs which stopped #3 and #4 from firing. After this 937 was bucking and vibrating heavily which Tony reported to ground control, who told him the aircraft looked fine and as long as he was up there to go ahead with the firing from the tube on the other wing. Well as someone once said, déjà vu all over again. After try #2 - in Tony's own words; "vibrating and shaking violently, the airplane was taking all that I had to maintain control. I radioed my situation to the ground controller and told him that I would try to make it back to the Naval Air Facility. The airplane really didn't want to fly. I felt like I was attached to a giant, violent bronco." Once on the ground A large, black "X" could be seen, etched in the fuselage right under where Tony had been sitting as the two rockets crossed under. Photos by Tony Tambini via Gary Verver.

1963 and the China Lake Compass Rose:  Gary Verver: Swinging VX-5 A-4C Skyhawk BuNo 145068, XE-4, on the compass rose using a system designed by Paul Dros & Don Spruill. Photos are from Paul Dros.

Paul Dros, "During my time with VX-5 Don Spruill and I did a lot of work with the AN/AJB-3 & the 3A guidance systems. In fact we spent a few weeks at MCAS El Toro Santa Anna CA training on the AFCS and the AJB3A systems. We were constantly taking aircraft to the compass rose and pushing the plane around with a group of guys. I was always one to try different things on how to do something with less manpower and time.

So with the approval of the higher powers and with a lot of help from other areas I came up with this system of swinging an aircraft using only two people at the compass rose.

We extended an aircraft tow bar, we then built an extension for the tug to move the NC-5 power unit away from the wing. There was a little problem with keeping the wheel on center of the compass rose. So we added the channel and locking blocks to the rotating platform. The last thing was to add a pointer to the outer wheel to indicate the center of
the compass heading lines.

Using this system Don Spruill and I could swing an aircraft around the compass rose in a few hours."
