Events January 28, 1980: Capt. Dominic Lemma ejected safely just before his VMA-131 A-4E BuNo 152081 exploded in mid-air 1.5 miles SW of MCAS Yuma shortly after take-off. Center fuel external tank leaked and caught fire on night takeoff. Tower called for Skyhawk to eject and so he did. Waycross, GA, Waycross Journal-Herald, Friday, February 1, 1980. May 29, 1980: unknown pilot ... 4th MAW HAMS-49 A-4E BuNo 151095 was destroyed at S. Weymouth after aircraft departed end of runway on landing rollout, struck trees/chain link fence, 29 May 1980. 0 fatalities. Naval Safety Center via Jim Winchester. Apparently repaired as it was returned to service with NFWS 06 March 1985. January 12, 1990: Capt. Duane Pandorf (VMA-131) ejected safely 1 mile from NAS Willow Grove, PA before his A-4M BuNo 158149 clipped a one-story car leasing company building and a home beside it on Route 611, skidded along the path of the city street about a half-block down a slight hill and came to rest at a stop sign at the intersection of Broadway and Willow Avenues. |
