Events December 17 1963: With H&MS-32 Det. 1 (BuNo 145039, DA-403) was damaged beyond repair when a mast on board the Essex (CVS 9) collapsed on it after the carrier encountered a storm in the North Atlantic while returning from a cruise to the Mediterranean Sea, 17 December 1963. SOC January 3, 1964. July 15, 1972: Capt. Dennis W. Vickery, 27, was killed last Saturday when a TA-4F (BuNo 152851) he was piloting crashed near Williams, AZ while on a flight from Luke AFB to MCAS Yuma. Co-pilot, 1st. Lt. James E. Wilson, 24, ejected safely. Both were stationed at MCAS Beaufort, SC. The Victoria Advocate, Friday, July 21, 1972. Following a low-level navigation flight with two A-4M Skyhawks the flight headed for a local military airfield. At this time an A-4M was in the lead at 500 feet altitude with the second A-4M 2,000 feet behind and stepped up and the TA-4F to the left and in trail of the leader. The second A-4M started to cross to the left of the lead and accelerated to facilitate join-up prior to proceeding to the airfield. The TA-4F's angle of bank was excessive and, as he passed behind the second A-4M, started to reverse the turn while still descending. The roll to the left continued to the near inverted position with positive G load applied. The pilot in the back asked "what the heck" and a snap roll to the right with full aft stick was executed in an attempt to recover. By this time the aircraft was approximately 200 feet AGL, in an incipient stall condition, still descending. The pilot in the back ejected at approximately 50 feet AGL with a sink rate of 100 to 200 feet per minute and the aircraft in a ten degree nose-up attitude. There was no apparent attempt to eject by the front seater. The aircraft impacted a wooded section of a hill and continued for 2,700 feet as it disintegrated. NAN, Grampaw Pettibone, Naval Aviation News, January 1973, Grampaw Pettibone, Naval Aviation News, January 1973 July of 1990: Unit stood down. The two AC#'s 01 and 04 were changed back from camouflage to olive drab. |
